Growing up Christmas Eve was as special to me as Christmas morning. That’s when everyone from the Wheeler side of my family gets together to have a quick dinner of BBQ and rip open gifts to each other. As I got older, the adults drew names. We are now down to just the kids getting gifts. It is still so much fun.
When I was a kid, it was nothing for the whole family to show up at Gran and Dee’s to hang out in the yard or for a dinner of skillet spaghetti. Now this seems to be the only day of the year when we are all together. It’s the only day of the year that I get to see some of them. This year, Aunt Bonnie, Sann, Evelyn, Tori and Phia were missing. (Don’t make a habit of it you guys!) There was lots of reminiscing and lots of food. I can’t believe how many cakes Penny made! Can you tell I had fun?
We left the Heath’s around nine to go back to Grandma’s for a new tradition. We open gifts with Tye Tye. Eventually all of Ned’s kids flow in and in the past and everyone chooses one gift to open. This year, no names were drawn and everyone only had one gift from Grandma and Grandpa so the kids ripped into everything. Tye, I still love my wallet; Hanan wears her boots almost every day; Ray loves the Titans shirt; Arleigh is in heaven with the cupcake maker and Bria is sleeping with Tuitty.
We try and go to bed early for Santa. The girls are better at it than the adults. We get up early to pack the car for a road trip to IL and a big country breakfast with the Kendalls. More on that tomorrow.
