A sweet friend called on Labor Day morning. She was headed to help sort boots at Fisher House and she wanted to know if Arleigh and Hanan wanted to come along. I jumped at the chance. Fisher House is a place for military families to stay when their loved one is in a military hospital for an extended period of time and they are far from home. It is a worthy cause. Here in Hawaii, every year Fisher House hosts a run across Ford Island to raise awareness for their cause. The run is free. They line the 5K race with boots representing our fallen soldiers since 9-11. It is truly amazing. The work that goes into putting tags on each boot, making sure they are in order so families can see them if they want. I just don’t have the words.
I am so thankful that we have friends that encourage my kids to participate in a service. I couldn’t imagine taking Bria and Jack up in the piles of boots. The carnage would be bad. Arleigh and Hanan had a great morning helping others and witnessing the sacrifices that were made for them. My friend posted a picture of a boot marked for a soldier from close to her hometown. His mother wrote a very kind letter about how much it means for others to remember the sacrifices that have been made. I get all choked up just thinking about it.
I don’t know yet if we will participate in the run. I’ll be taking some more boots up this week and helping where I can. Any day is a good day to remember our military.
A few pictures that were snapped of my girls at work…
